Best Practices for Tailings Dam Design - KCB

Background. Recent major tailings dam failures have led to an industry-wide review of the design and management of tailings storage facilities. Before the 1960s, mine tailings were often disposed directly into ponds, lakes, rivers or natural topographic depressions, or stored in impoundments supported by earthen dams, without necessarily applying engineering principles (McLeod et al. 2015).

Tailings - Wikipedia

Tailings from the Osor fluorite mines release large amounts of potentially toxic elements into the environment. This work is a proposal to remove these waste materials and use them as a raw material in the manufacture of glass. The chemical composition of the tailings was determined by X-ray fluorescence and the mineralogy by X-ray diffraction.

Characterization of the Tailings. The basic geotechnical properties of the four tailings are summarized in Table 1, and Fig. 1 displays the grain size distributions. The specific gravity of the coarse and fine iron tailings are 3.23 and 3.08, respectively, which are consistent with those of metal tailings but much higher than those of natural soils.

Tailings - Rio Tinto

Tailings are discharged – normally as slurry – to a storage facility, where water is subsequently recovered and recycled back into the operation. Tailings are mainly discharged in two ways. The first is to use below water approaches. The second is to use above water/above ground approaches.

Actually, Bediane tailings presented the higher Zn concentration, which induced the higher retarding effect. It is also important to underline that the use of tailings with higher Pb–Zn content (Boubker tailings) may inhibit cement hydration and expressively lower compressive strength of masonry mortars (see 5.1.4).

The Potential Re-Use of Saudi Mine Tailings in Mine ...

The re-use of tailings in mine backfill also reduces the cost of mining waste disposal in dumps . Optimizing backfill systems from preparation to placement while considering capital, operating, and maintenance costs is critical to supporting a sustainable mining operation. Poor backfill system design can drive up costs and jeopardize the safety ...

"Use Of Mine Tailings For Unpaved Road Base Construction ...

Tailings have been traditionally stored in ponds surrounded by tailings dams for many years but since many accidents, including fatal ones, took place that involved tailings dams, a new approach has become necessary for their storage. An approach devised by Robinsky in the early seventies for the storage and disposal of mine tailings suggests that it is more advantageous environmentally to ...

Tailings - Eco - English Wiki

Tailings are pollution-causing blocks that are created when using the Screening Machine or Sensor Based Belt Sorter to create Concentrated Ores.Tailings and Wet Tailings are similar items but they use different crafting tables to create the Concentrated Ores.. Stockpiles and other storage (including vehicles) containing them will leak pollution into surrounding blocks.

Tailings, most often in the form of a wet slurry, are conventionally stored above-ground behind earthen dams. There is no comprehensive global registry of tailings dams. It is estimated there are around 18,000 dams, 3,500 of which are active. However, that number may be much higher. For example, China alone has more than 12,000 tailings dams.
